"Hell"

Revelation 20:13-14  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it: and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

"Hell” is the English rendering of two different Greek words in the New Testament.

The English word is from the Anglo Saxon (“hel”), Genitive case (“helle”), which means, a hidden place, from the Anglo Saxon (“helan”), equal to hide.

It is in the New Testament used as the translation of two Greek words:

(1). “Gehenna.” This is the translation of the Hebrew “Gai hinnom,” the Valley of “Hinnom” or “the Valley” of the sons of “Hinnom,” where were the fires through which children were passed in the worship of Moloch.

In the Old Testament “Tophet” was the Hebrew word used, because it was a place in this valley.

In our Lord`s day the idolatry had ceased, but the fires were still continually burning there for the destruction of the refuse of Jerusalem. Hence, “geenna” was used for the fires of destruction associated with the judgment of God. Sometimes, “Geenna of fire.” (2 Kings 23:10 And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech. Isaiah 30:33 For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it. Jeremiah 7:31-32 And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart. Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that it shall no more be called Tophet, nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of slaughter: for they shall bury in Tophet, till there be no place. Jeremiah 19:11-14 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury. Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet: And the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods. Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, whither the LORD had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’S house; and said to all the people,).

“Geenna” occurs 12 times, and is always rendered “hell,” (Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Matthew 5:29-30 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Mark 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Mark 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.).

(2). “Hades.” Greek, “Hades,” used by the Greeks for the “unseen world.”

The meaning which the Greeks put upon it does not concern us: nor have we anything to do with the imagination of the heathen, or the traditions of Jews or Romanists, or the teaching of demons or evil spirits, or of any who still cling to them.

The Holy Spirit has used it as one of the “words pertaining to the earth,” and in so doing has “purified” it, “as silver tried in a furnace,” (Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.). From this we learn that His own words “are pure,” but words belonging to this earth have to be “purified.”

The Old Testament is the fountain head of the Hebrew language. It has no literature behind it. But the case is entirely different with the Greek language. The Hebrew “Sheol” is a word “Divine” in its origin and usage. The Greek “Hades” is human in its origin and comes down to us laden with centuries of development, in which it has acquired new senses, meaning, and usages.

Seeing that the Holy Spirit has used it in (Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.), as His own equivalent of “Sheol” in (Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.), He has settled, once for all, the sense in which we are to understand it. The meaning He has given to “Sheol” in Psalm 16:10, is the meaning we are to give it whenever it occurs in the New Testament, whether we transliterate it or translate it. We have no liberty to do otherwise, and must discard everything outside the Word of God.

The word occurs eleven times (Matthew 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Luke 10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell. Luke 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. Revelation 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.), and is rendered “hell” in every passage except one, where it is rendered “grave” (1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?): margin, “hell.”

In the Revised Version the word is always transliterated “Hades,” except in 1 Corinthians 15:55, where “death” is substituted because of the reading, in all the texts, of thanate for hades, and in the American Revised Version also.

As Hades is the Divine Scriptural equivalent of Sheol. It maybe well to note that while “Hades” is rendered “hell” in the New Testament, except once, where the rendering “the grave” could not be avoided, Sheol, its Hebrew equivalent occurs 65 times, and is rendered “the grave” 31 times: “hell” 31 times, 4 times with the margin “the grave”: and “pit” only 3 times.

“The grave,” therefore, is obviously the best rendering, meaning “the state of death” (German “sterbend,” for which we have no English equivalent): not the act of dying, as an examination of all the occurrences of both words will show.

(a). The rendering “pit” so evidently means “the grave” that it may at once be substituted for it (Numbers 16:30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD. Numbers 16:33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. Job 17:16 They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.).

(b). The rendering “the grave” (not “a grave,” which is Hebrew “keber” or “bor.”) exactly expresses the meaning of both “Sheol” and “Hades.” For, as to direction, it is always down: as to place, it is earth: as to relation, it is always in contrast with the state of the living (Deuteronomy 32:22-25 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them. They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.), and (1 Samuel 2:6-8 The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.): as to association, it is connected with mourning (Genesis 37:34-35 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.), sorrow (Genesis 42:38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 2 Samuel 22:6 The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; Psalm 18:5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. Psalm 116:3 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.), fright and terror (Numbers 16:27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children. Number 16:34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.), mourning (Isaiah 38:3 And said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. Isaiah 38:10 I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years. Isaiah 38:17-18 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. For the grave cannot praise thee, death can not celebrate thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth.), silence (Psalm 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? Psalm 31:17 Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave. Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.), no knowledge (Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.), punishment (Numbers 16:29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the LORD hath not sent me. Numbers 16:34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. 1 Kings 2:6 Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace. 1 Kings 2:9 Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood. Job 24:19 Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned. Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.), Revised Version, equal returned), “corruption” (Psalm 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.): as to duration, resurrection is the only exit from it (Psalm 16:11 Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. Acts 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Acts 13:37 But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption. 1 Corinthians 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 20:5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Revelation 20:13-14 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.).

(3). “Tarturoo,” occurs only in (2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;), equal, to thrust down to Tartarus, Tartarus being a Greek word, not used elsewhere, or at all in the Septuagint. Homer describes it as “subterranean,” Compare (Deuteronomy 32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.), which may refer to this. The Homeric Tartarus is the prison of the Titans, or giants, who rebelled against Zeus.

It is written in (Matthew 8:22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.). The first means “spiritually dead,” and the second, a “dead body.”

The word “Nekros” (Noun or Adjective) has different meanings, according as it is used in different connections:

(1). With the Article (“hoi nekroi”) it denotes dead bodies, or corpses or carcasses in the grave, apart from the personality they once had. This is the Old Testament idiom also.

(2). Without the Article (“nekroi”), it denotes the persons who were once alive, but who are now alive no longer: i.e. dead persons as distinct from dead bodies.

(3). With the Preposition, but without the Article, which maybe latent in the Preposition (“ek nekron”), it denotes out from among dead people.

(4). With a Preposition, and with the Article, (“ekton nekron”), it denotes emphatically out from among the dead bodies, or corpses. Compare, (Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Colossians 2:12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from he dead.).

It is written in (1 Corinthians 15:50-54 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.).

“Corruption” in the Greek is (“Phthosa“). which means, “perish.” “Incorruption” in the Greek is (“Aphtharsis“), which means, “immortality.”

“Hell” is symbolically” used for those who are ignorant of, who refuse to obey, or of those who do not care about the word of God.

It is written in (Matthew 8:11-12 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.). Many. Used for the figure of speech “Erphemismon” for Gentiles, to avoid giving offence at this stage of His ministry. Sit down, equal recline as quest in eating, or at a feast. Children equal sons. Greek “huios.” A Hebraism denoting those who relate by any ties of friendship: i.e. followers, learners, inhabitants. Outer, equal outer. Greek, exoteros. Occur only in Matthew here, and in (Matthew 22;13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.). Outside the place where the feast was going on in (Matthew 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.). Weeping and gnashing, equal the weeping and the grinding. The “Articles denoting not a state but a definite occasion and time when this event shall take place. Used by the Lord seven times (Matthew 8:12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Luke 13:28 There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.). A study of theses will show that the occasion is “the end of the age,” when “the Lord and His servants shall have come,” and when “the Lord will deal with the “wick” and “unprofitable” servants, and sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in His kingdom.

There are those “symbolically” who, are already in “hell,” (Ephesians 4:17-18 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:).

After death, we are taught in (Luke 16:22-31 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.).

The Second Book of Esdras 7:77-105 For about death, the teaching is: When the final sentence goes forth from the Most High that a man is to die, when the soul departs from the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it prays to the glory of the most High: if it was one of those who scorned and not observe the way of the Most High, and of those who have despised his law, and those who hate those who fear God, such spirits shall not enter dwellings but wander about thenceforth in torment, always grieving and sad, in seven ways: The first way is that they have scorned the Law of the Most High. The second way is that they can no longer make a good repentance, so that they may live. The third way is that they will see the reward destined for those who have believed the agreements of the Most High. The fourth way is that they will consider the torment destined for them in the last days. The fifth way is that they will see that the dwelling places of the others are guarded by angels in profound silence. The sixth way is that they will see that some of them will pass over to be tormented henceforth. The seven way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, is that they will waste away in shame and be consumed in disgrace, and wither with fear, at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they lived, and before whom they are destined to be judged in the last times.

“But of those who have observed the ways of the Most High, this is the order, when they shall be separated from this fragile jar. In the time when they live in it, they carefully served the Most High, though they were in danger every hour, so as to keep the Law of the Lawgiver perfectly. Therefore this is the teaching about them: First of all, they see with great rapture the glory of him who takes them up, for they will rest in seven orders. The first order is that they have striven with much toil to conquer the wicked thought that was formed with them, so that it should not lead them away from life to death. The second order is that they will see the labyrinth in which the souls of the ungodly wanders, and the punishment that awaits them. The third order is that they see the testimony that he who form them has borne to them, because when they were alive they faithfully observed the Law which was given them. The fourth order is that they understand the rest which they enjoy, gathered in their chambers, in great quietness, watched over by angels, and the glory that awaits them in the last days. The fifth order is that they exult that they have now escaped what is corruptible and will possess the future as their inheritance, and besides perceive the narrowness and toilsome from which they have been freed and the spaciousness they are destined to receive and enjoy in immortality. The sixth order is that it is shown them how their face is destined to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, and be incorruptible thenceforth. The seventh order, which is greater than all those that have been mentioned, is that they will exult boldly, and that they will trust confidently, and rejoice fearlessly, for they hasten to see the face of him whom they served in life, and from whom they are to receive their reward when they are glorified. These are the orders of the souls of the upright, as henceforth proclaimed, and the above ways of torture are those which those who would not give heed will henceforth suffer.”

And I answered and said, “Then will time be given the souls after they are separated from the bodies, to see what you have told me of ?” And he said to me, “They have freedom for seven days, to see on the seven days the things you have been told, and afterward they will be gathered in their dwellings.”

And I answered and said, “If I have found favor in your sight, show me, your slave, further, whether on the Day of Judgment the upright will be able to intercede for the ungodly, or to beseech the Most High on their behalf, fathers for sons, or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, and friends for those who are most dear to them.”

And he answered me and said, “Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The Day of Judgment is final and shows to all the stamp of truth. Just as now a father cannot send his son or a son his father or a master his slave or a friend his dearest friend to be sick for him, or sleep or eat or be cured, so no one can pray for another then, or lay a burden on another, for they must all bear everyone his own iniquity or uprightness then.”

It is written in (The Second Book Of Esdras 9:1-13 And he answered me and said, “Measure it carefully within yourself, and it will be that when you see that a certain part of the signs which have been foretold have passed, then you will understand that it is the very time when the Most High is to visit the world that was made by him. So when there shall appear in the world earthquakes, the tumult of peoples, plots of the heathen, wavering of leaders, and confusion of princes, then you will understand that it was of these things that the Most High spoke from the days that were of old, from the beginning. For just as with everything that has happened in the world, the beginning is plain and the end manifest, so also are the times of the Most High: the beginnings are signalized by wonders and mighty works, and the end by acts and signs. And it will be that everyone who will be saved, and who is able to escape by reason of his deeds or his faith, by which he believed, will survive the dangers I have foretold, and will see my salvation in my land, and within my borders which I have consecrated to myself from eternity. Then those who have now neglected my ways will be amazed, and those who have rejected them with contempt will abide in torment. For as many as failed to acknowledge me in their lifetime, though they received my benefits, and as many as disdained my Law, while they still had freedom, and while an opportunity to repent was still open to them, did not understand but scorned it, these must recognize it after death, through torment. So you must no longer be curious as to how the ungodly will be punished, but ask how the righteous will be saved, to whom that age belongs and for the sake of whom it was made.”

John 12:46-48 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. The Second Book Of Esdras 1:36-37 “They have not seen the prophets, yet they will call to mind their uprightness. I call to witness the gratitude of the people that is to come, whose little ones rejoice with gladness, though they do not see me with physical eyes, but in spirit they will believe the things I have said.”
