"The Giants"

Genesis 6:4  There were giants in the earth in those days: and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The progeny of the fallen angels with the daughters of Adam are called in Genesis the 6th chapter (Nephilim), which means fallen ones (from naphal, to fall). What these beings were can be gathered only from Scripture. They were evidently great in size, as well as great in wickedness. They were superhuman, abnormal beings: and their destruction was necessary for the preservation of the human race, and for the faithfulness of God`s Word, (Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.).

It is written in the Book of (Enoch 15:1-10 The addressing me, He spoke and said: Hear, neither be afraid, O Enoch, O righteous man, and scribe of righteousness: approach hither, and hear my voice. Go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent thee to pray for them: You ought to pray for men, and not men for you. Wherefore have you forsaken the lofty and holy heaven, which endures for ever, and have lain with women: have defiled yourselves with the daughters of men: have taken to yourselves wives: have acted like the sons of the earth, and have begotten giants ? You being spiritual, holy, and living a life which is eternal, have polluted yourselves with women: have begotten in carnal blood: have lusted in the blood of men: and have done as those who are flesh blood do. These however die and perish. Therefore have I given to them wives, that they might cohabit with them: that sons might be born to them, and that this might be transacted upon earth. But you from beginning were made spiritual, living a life which is eternal, and not subject to death in all the generations of the world. Therefore I made not wives for you, because being spiritual, your dwelling is in heaven. Now the giants, who have been born of flesh and of spirit, shall call upon earth evil spirits, and on earth shall be their habitation. Evil spirits shall proceed from their flesh, because they were created from above: from the holy Watchers was their beginning and primary foundation. Evil spirits shall be upon earth, and the spirits of the wicked shall they be called. The habitation of the spirits of heaven shall be in heaven: but upon earth shall be the habitation of terrestrial spirits, who are born in earth. The spirit of the giants shall be like clouds, which shall oppress, corrupt, fall, contend, and bruise upon earth. They shall cause lamentation. No food shall they eat: and they shall be thirsty: they shall be concealed, and those spirits shall rise up against the sons of men, and against women: for they come forth from them during the days of slaughter and destruction.

Enoch 18:16 The stars which roll over fire are those which transgressed the commandment of God before their time arrived: for they came not in their proper season. Therefore was He offended with them, and bound them, until the period of the consummation of their crime in the secret year. Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

This was why the “Flood” was brought “upon the world of the ungodly,” (2 Peter 2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;), as prophesied by Enoch (Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,).

But we read of the (“Nephilim”) again in, (Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.): “there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, which come of the Nephilim.” How, it may be asked, could this be, if they were all destroyed in the “Flood?” The answer is contained in, (6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.): “There were Nephilim in the earth in those days (i.e. in the days of Noah): and also “After That,” when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became (the) mighty men (the Hebrew, “gibbor,” the heroes) which were of old, “men of renown” (literally, men of the name, i.e. who got a name and were renown for their ungodliness).

So that “after that,” i.e. after the “Flood,” there was a second irruption of these fallen angels, evidently smaller in number and more limited in area, for they were for the most part confined to Canaan, and were in fact known as “the nation of Canaan.” It was for the destruction of these, that the sword of Israel was necessary, as the “Flood” had been before.

As to the date of this second irruption, it was evidently soon after it became known that the seed was to come through Abraham: for, when he came out from Haran (Genesis 12:6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.), and entered Canaan, the significant fact is stated: “The Canaanite was then (i.e. already) in the land.” And in, (Genesis 14:5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,), they were already known as “Rephaim” and “Emim,” and had established themselves at Ashteroth Karnaim and Shaveh Kirathaim.

In, (Genesis 15:18-21 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.), they are enumerated and named among Canaanite Peoples: “Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, and the Amorites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites” (Genesis 15:19-21 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites. Compare, Exodus 3:8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Exodus 3:17 And I have said, I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, unto a land flowing with milk and honey. Exodus 23:23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. Deuteronomy the 7th chapter, Deuteronomy 20:17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: Joshua 12:8 In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south country; the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites:).

These were to be cut off, and driven out, and utterly destroyed, (Deuteronomy 20:17 But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: Joshua 3:10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites. “But Israel failed in this” Joshua 13:13 Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day. Joshua 15:63 As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day. Joshua 16:10 And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer: but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites unto this day, and serve under tribute. Joshua 17:18 But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong. Judges 1:19-20 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. Judges 1:28-30 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out. Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. Judges 2:1-5 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you. And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD. Judges 3:1-7 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof; Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath. And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites: And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.): and we know not how many got away to other countries to escape the general destruction. If this were recognized it would go far to solve many problems connected with Anthropology.

As to their other names, they were called “Anakim,” from one “Anak” which came of the “Nephilim,” (Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.), and “Rephaim” from one “Rapha,” another notable one among them.

From (Deuteronomy 2:10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;), they were known by some as “Emim,” and “Horim,” and “Zamzummim,” (Deuteronomy 2:20-21 (That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims; A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:), and “Avin.”

As “Rephaim” they were well known, and are often mention: but, unfortunately, instead of this, their proper name, being preserved, it is variously translated as “dead,: “deceased,” or “giants.” These “Rephaim” are to have no resurrection. This fact is stated in, (Isaiah 26:14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.), where the proper name is rendered “deceased,” and (Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.), where it is rendered “the dead.”

It is rendered “dead” seven times (Job 26:5 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof. Psalm 88:10 Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise thee? Proverbs 2:18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. Proverbs 9:18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell. Proverbs 21:16 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead. Isaiah 14:8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. Isaiah 26:19 Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.). It is rendered “deceased” in, (Isaiah 26:14 They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.).

It is retained as a proper name “Rephaim” ten times (two being in the margin). (Genesis 14:5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim, Genesis 15:20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, Joshua 12:15 The king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; (in the margin) 2 Samuel 5:18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 2 Samuel 5:22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 2 Samuel 23:13 And three of the thirty chief went down, and came to David in the harvest time unto the cave of Adullam: and the troop of the Philistines pitched in the valley of Rephaim. 1 Chronicles 11:15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 1 Chronicles 14:9 And the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 1 Chronicles 20:4 And it came to pass after this, that there arose war at Gezer with the Philistines; at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Sippai, that was of the children of the giant: and they were subdued. (in the margin), Isaiah 17:5 And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm; and it shall be as he that gathereth ears in the valley of Rephaim.).

In all the other places it is rendered “giants,” (Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. Numbers the 23rd and 33rd chapters), where it is “Nephilim:” and (Job 16:14 He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.), where it is “gibbor.”

By reading all these passages the Bible student may know all that can be known about these beings.

It is certain that the second irruption took place before Genesis the 14th chapter, for there the “Rephaim” were mixed up with the five nations or peoples, which included Sodom and Gomorrha, and were defeated by the four kings under Chedorlaomer. Their principal locality was evidently “Ashtaroth Karnaim:” while the “Emim” were in the plan of Kiriathaim (Genesis 14:5 And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emims in Shaveh Kiriathaim,).

“Anak” was a noted descendant of the “Nephilim:” and “Rapha” was another, giving their names respectively to the different clans. “Anak`s” father was “Arba,” the original builder of Hebron (Genesis 35:27 And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned. Joshua 15:13 And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah, according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua, even the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron. Joshua 21:11 And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.): and this Palestine branch of the “Anakim” was not called “Arbahim” after him, but “Anakim” after “Anak.” They were great, mighty, and tall (Deuteronomy 2:10-11 The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims. Deuteronomy 2:21-23 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.). Deuteronomy 9:2 A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak!), evidently inspiring the ten spies with great fear (Numbers 13:33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.). “Og” king of Bashan is described in (Deuteronomy 3:11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.). About 18 feet in height, and 8 feet in width. (2 Samuel 21:20 And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant.).

Their strength is seen in “the giant cities of Bashan” today: and we know not how far they may have been utilized by Egypt in the construction of building, which is still an unsolved problem.

Arba was rebuilt by the Khabiri or confederates seven years before Zoan was build by the Egyptian Pharoahs of the nineteenth dynasty.

If these “Nephilim,” had their branch of “Rephaim,” were associated with Egypt, we have an explanation of the problem which has for ages perplexed all engineers, as to how those huge stones and monuments were brought together. Why not in Egypt as well as in “the giant cities of Bashan” which exist, as such, to this day?

Moreover, we have in these mighty men, the “men of renown,” the explanation of the origin of the Greek mythology. That mythology was no mere invention of the human brain, but it grew out of the tradition, and memories, and legends of the doings of that mighty race of beings: and was gradually evolved out of the “heroes” of Genesis the 6th chapter. The fact that they were supernatural in their origin formed an easy step to their being regarded as the demi-gods of the Greeks.

Thus the Babylonian “Creation Tablets,” the Egyptian “Book of the dead,” the Greek mythology, and heathen Cosmogonies, which by some are set on an equality with Scripture, or by other added in support of it, are all the corruption and perversion of primitive truths, distorted in proportion as their origin was forgotten, and their memories faded away
